So one of my resolutions for 2018 was to read 40 books. Yeah, 40. I set my resolutions
I grew up around books; my house as a child was practically me and my dad’s personal library. I used to read all day every day when I was in primary and secondary school, but now that I’m in college all I’ve really made time for is doing homework and vegging out in front of Netflix. I think though, that I’ve still been in the mindset of having lots of books around and reading all the time, because I’ve been buying books upon books upon books since about my junior year of high school. The problem is I haven’t been reading them. I have about 20-25 books that have just been sitting on my bookshelf, waiting to be read, and I’ve not been making time to read them.
That’s where clearing my bookshelves comes in. I’ve instituted a no buy for 2018 on multiple things: new clothing, room décor pieces, stationery (at least for the first quarter of the year). Most pertinent for this post though is that I’ve decided not to buy any more books until I’ve finished reading all the ones from my bookshelf. I just want to stop buying things that I have in abundance that am not using.
My plan is that by the end of the year I’ll have read all of the books on my bookshelf that I haven’t yet. The point isn’t for me to read the books just to read them. I want to actually enjoy what I’m reading so if I’m not liking something in media res (that is, in the middle of reading it), or after I finish it, it’s getting donated. And I think I’m going to rearrange my bookshelf into things I love and things I just liked.
Every time I finish a book from my bookshelf, I’ll be posting something about it here. Whether it’s a review, a whine session, or a quick post saying “These are the last three books I read from my shelf. Here’s how I feel about each of them in five sentences or less!” I’ll be posting something. Fingers crossed it’ll make me accountable to actually getting this project done.
I’m also planning on doing something similar where I go through my closet and plan outfits with pieces I’ve not worn in a long time, so stay tuned for that post soon! As for now, my first book I’m reading is The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho, so stayed tuned for that post too!
